Grown up in Dissenting circles of Northern England, poet, essayst, political writer and educationalist, Anna Laetitia Barbauld was a prominent figure in the literary panorama of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. She participated in the debates of her time exploring a variety of genres and subject matters, coping with complex issues such as ethics, aesthetics, gender and politics – a resonant female voice. This volume analyses different phases of her production, each marked by a different idea of community and of the relation between humanity and nature.
